I think it is fair to say that we have all done it. We have a hard week or a shift at work or a hard day at school and as a reward we allow ourselves to do absolutely nothing. We curl up on the sofa and watch a movie or serial. Maybe just browse social media for hours. We are in a state of happiness no?
What is it that makes us feel like we are happy? Is it the actual doing nothing or is it the contrast between having done a lot and now doing nothing. If we end up doing nothing on a regular basis, are we still in a state of happiness or are we actually just bored and kidding ourselves?
When does this reward system of doing nothing actually turn into a negative thing? Have you ever deliberately got out of doing something or turned down a perfectly nice offer to do something just so that you can do nothing? Do you find yourself doing nothing more than actually doing something?
The way we expand our interests and make our lives more active and productive is by trying new things. We will not always like what we try, but the trying is the important thing. Eventually we will find things we like to do and by doing these we will expand our lives and make them more interesting. We will also meet new people, see new places and experience new things.
If we accept our state of happiness as being a state of doing nothing, we are stopping ourselves from experiencing life and expanding our own personal universe. We should fill our days with things to do. Learn a new language, learn a musical instrument, go to a fitness or martial arts lesson. Work on that business idea, write a poem or read a book. Visit a family member or friend. Go with grandma to the local flower show. The more variety the better.
Sitting on the sofa watching a screen, be it a TV or a phone is doing absolutely nothing to add quality to our lives. We are not happy, we are bored so let's create a more interesting life by doing something and everything. Then when we are finished living our exciting day we can crash on the sofa and watch a movie.
